Corporate sustainability:
What does that mean in concrete terms?
The global issue of climate and environmental protection does not stop at companies. After all, companies actually have a fairly high share in the exploitation of our environment: from the utilization of non-renewable raw materials to energy generation from coal or nuclear power to the artificial shortage of product life cycles. An entrepreneur can pick up on all of these points and make a difference through sustainable manufacturing processes and responsible business practices.
It is not just a trend to establish sustainability in companies. Many CEOs do it out of conviction, because there are many backgrounds that make "green", environmentally friendly actions indispensable. In fact, companies have numerous tools at their disposal on how to contribute effectively in the long term.
One thing is certain:
The measures implemented by a company for more sustainability and a careful approach to the environment are also reflected in the company's success. One more reason why managing directors need to take a closer look at the topic.
In Germany, Europe and worldwide, there are already applicable guidelines and laws through which sustainability in companies is to be regulated. These include, for example:
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) - EU Directive
German Sustainability Code (DNK)

Sustainability on your own?
The key here is toset the right priorities as a company
and, above all, to be able to integrate them into the
corporate concept in the long term.
Some companies already take various measures on their own initiative, but without developing a sustainability strategy. Often it is a large, often loose, collection of topics and measures. Certainly, all these measures can contribute to making the company more environmentally friendly and socially valuable. However, these colorful collections of different sustainability measures hold some stumbling blocks for companies:
- In most cases, improvements in sustainability performance come to a halt after a few years unless clear individual goals and overarching objectives for Sustainability gesetzt werden.
- For employees, many different topics offer less opportunity for identification and orientation than a clear direction of sustainability commitment.
- If sustainability issues are not anchored in corporate planning for the next few years, it can quickly happen that commitment is abruptly reduced as soon as another corporate goal becomes important.
- Many diverse and smaller measures can only be explained in a much more complex way than a clear focus and rationale for them. The credibility of one's efforts is thus hampered if this complexity must first be understood.
Efficiency and optimization of production processes
More efficient use of energy and resources reduces the environmental impact of doing business. In addition, greater efficiency also means lower costs. If fewer resources are needed for day-to-day operations and production processes, the bills that have to be paid are also lower.
The same applies to shorter transport routes if more emphasis is placed on regional and national goods, productions instead of goods from abroad. Efficiency already starts in the (intra-)logistics.
New customer acquisition
and image
In general, measures for sustainability and environmental protection bring advantages when it comes to maintaining and acquiring new customers. More and more potential customers pay very conscious attention to whether a company is committed to the environment or not. Environmentally conscious actions are perceived positively in the eyes of the public - and customers make their decisions accordingly as to which company they use services from or purchase goods from.
A positive image as an environmentally conscious company can also be used very well for marketing strategy. Companies that rely on high energy consumption can advertise that they use renewable energy sources and thus improve their brand image in the public eye. This content can be effectively incorporated into the marketing mix and prepared for social channels, for example, with the help of storytelling. Today, sustainability is an important criterion for buyers when choosing their products. Ethics and social justice are also playing an increasingly important role..
In this way, a "green image" of a company brings far more acceptance in society and, consequently, higher sales
